First established in 1972 as the Friends of the Worthington Public Library, the mission of the Friends Foundation of Worthington Libraries is to increase the use and awareness of Worthington Libraries, to advocate for strong public funding of the Library and to provide financial support to enhance library services and programs.
The Friends provided both financial support and volunteer assistance during the construction of Northwest Library, which opened in 1996, and the Worthington Park Library, which opened in 2008. The Friends worked with the library board to help the Library pass three operating levies in 1992, 2005 and 2013. A portion of Friends income supported the operating costs of these critical levies.
In 2002, the Friends established the Worthington Libraries Endowment Fund at The Columbus Foundation with a contribution of $10,000. The Friends are now charged with managing and developing this fund, which will provide a supplemental revenue stream for Worthington Libraries and represents another way donors can make a lasting and positive impact on the community. In 2008, the organization changed its name to Friends Foundation of Worthington Libraries to highlight this increased responsibility.
The Friends Foundation currently boasts over 200 dedicated members and contributes approximately $30,000 to the Library each year. These funds are used to support nearly all library programs and special events, including the annual community breakfast held during National Library Week. In 2014, more than 10,000 children, teens and adults participated in the library’s summer reading program, which is fully sponsored by the Friends Foundation.
In addition to membership and special events, the Friends Foundation earns money through book sales.
