Last month, nearly 25 teens gave up an entire Saturday to read and help kids less fortunate than themselves during Worthington Libraries' Teen Read-A-Thon.
Throughout November, participants asked friends and family to make pledges toward the total number of pages they expected to read on Dec. 6, 2008 from 9am - 6pm at Northwest Library, Old Worthington Library or Worthington Park Library. Approximately $550 was raised; every penny of which benefited residents of the United Methodist Children’s Home (UMCH).
The UMCH, located in Worthington, cares for young people with personal problems and problems with school, their parents and communities.
All the money raised was used to buy DVD players, bath towels, kitchen supplies and board games for residents. Target gift cards were also purchased and given to kids so they could choose items on their own.
During scheduled breaks throughout the day, participants were treated to a reading by author Margaret Peterson Haddix at Northwest Library; teens at Old Worthington Library and Worthington Park Library made holiday cards for homebound patrons.
