Community champions charitable causes

For a number of Worthington Libraries' patrons, a healthy dose of holiday spirit has been delivered at just the right time.

As the holidays draw near, a generous group of librarygoers aims to spread cheer to those who may need help at this time of year.

Four years ago, the Library started Warm Up Worthington, an Old Worthington Library program that mobilizes the community to knit or crochet 7" x 9" blocks, which are sewn together to form afghans that are donated to Columbus area charities.

This year, more than 70 people of all ages participated in Warm Up Worthington events, creating nearly 40 blankets that will be donated to the United Methodist Children's Home (UMCH), the Worthington Food Pantry & Resource Center and the Worthington Salvation Army location.

Earlier this month, 10 teens gave up an entire Saturday to read and help kids less fortunate than themselves during Northwest Library's Teen Read-A-Thon.

Throughout November, participants asked friends and family to make pledges toward the total number of pages they expected to read on Dec. 5 from 10am-6pm at the library. Nearly $300 is expected to be raised; every penny of which will be used to buy gifts for UMCH residents.

The UMCH, located in Worthington, cares for young people with personal problems and problems with school, their parents and communities.
