Book groups are backbone of programming

Consistently popular and well-attended, book discussion groups are a mainstay of the library's quarterly programming for adults.

Whether you fancy fiction or non-fiction, are available in the morning or after work, you'll meet new friends and discover new favorites during monthly meetings.

Old Worthington Library offers two book discussion groups: the Thursday Morning Book Discussion Group meets at 10:30 am on the last Thursday of the month, while Speaking Volumes meets at 7:30 pm on the first Wednesday of the month.

Thursday Morning Book Discussion Group

  • August 27
    Selected title: Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
    In 1956, as Rev. John Ames approaches the end of his life, he writes a letter to his young son chronicling three previous generations of his family, a story that stretches back to the Civil War and reveals uncomfortable family secrets.
  • September 24
    Selected title: Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson
    This book traces the author's decade-long odyssey to build schools (especially for girls), throughout the region that gave birth to the Taliban and sanctuary to al Qaeda. While Mortenson wages war with the root causes of terrorism - poverty and ignorance - he must survive kidnapping, death threats and wrenching separations from his family.
  • October 22
    Selected title: Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer
    As London is emerging from the shadow of World War II, writer Juliet Ashton discovers her next subject in a book club on Guernsey - a club born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi after its members are discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island.
  • November 19
    Selected title: In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan
    Examines eating habits in light of contemporary trends toward ultra diet-consciousness. Pollan's advice is: "Don't eat anything that your great-great grandmother would not recognize as food." Looking at what science does and does not know about diet and health, he proposes a new way to think about what to eat, informed by ecology and tradition rather than by the nutrient-by-nutrient approach.

    Selected title: A Father's Law by Richard Wright
    Ruddy Turner, a black Chicago police officer, is appointed the police chief of a rich Chicago suburb. As he settles into his office, the sixth victim of a serial killer is discovered. In an atmosphere of mounting hysteria in town, Ruddy's unconscious cop mind begins to connect his son Tommy to the murders. Is it due to some Freudian rivalry between the father and the son, or to the facts of the case?
