Spring is just around the corner! This is the time of year when everyone starts looking forward to getting outside and enjoying the warmer weather. At the Library, it's also the time when we start preparing for one of our signature events: the annual community breakfast.

by Chuck Gibson
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries school, public, academic and special participate.
In Worthington, we also see National Library Week as an opportunity to thank residents for their ongoing support and use of library services. In 2011, Worthington Libraries was once again recognized as a five-star library by Library Journal and is the ninth highest circulating library in the state, behind only the eight metropolitan library systems. This is because Worthington cardholders checked out a whopping 3.4 million items last year.
We hope you'll attend this year's community breakfast, which is generously sponsored by the Friends Foundation of Worthington Libraries. We'll provide a brief year-in-review snapshot and tell you about some future initiatives, including gathering information for our next strategic plan.
Worthington Libraries has followed a regular cycle of developing and implementing carefully researched strategic plans for more than 20 years. We are currently in the final year of implementing our 2010-2012 Strategic Plan and have begun to look forward to the development of our next three-year plan.
As part of this process, we'll provide residents with a variety of means to get involved, offer feedback and help us determine the future direction of the Library. More information to come! In the meantime, I hope to see you at the breakfast where I can wish you a happy spring in person.
