Poetry contest winners announced

The winners of Worthington Libraries' All-Ages Poetry Contest were announced at open mic readings on Saturday, April 28.

More than 50 entries were received for the second annual competition, and a panel of judges awarded first through third place honors in five categories.

Poems by the 15 winners are now on display in all our library locations, or available for download in an online chapbook (PDF; 8.5Mb).

Grades K-3

  • First place: "Do Not Fear" by Vivian Strange
  • Second place: "Airplanes" by Udbhav Raghukanth
  • Third place: "Places" by Luka Srsic

Grades 4-6

  • First place: "Spring is like a rainbow" by Sylvia Strange
  • Second place: "Spring" by Olivia Miller
  • Third place: "Bubbles" by Meenakshi Jani

Grades 7-8

  • First place: "The Battle of Darenth River" by Cora Reichert
  • Second place: "The Cat" by Hannah Cochran
  • Third place: "Alone" by Carolyn Chen

Grades 9-12

  • First place: "_______" by Alexander Martin
  • Second place: "Haunt" by Annie Chen
  • Third place: "To a Book Critic" by Juliya Klochan

Adult

  • First place: "Untitled" by Amy Sharp
  • Second place: "Girl with Violin" by Elizabeth Kennedy
  • Third place: "This is you" by Gabrielle Burton
Judges for this year's contest were:

  • Lesley Jenike, Columbus College of Art and Design assistant professor of English;
  • Stuart Lishan, Ohio State University associate professor of English;

  • Lori Poleway, Thomas Worthington High School library media specialist;
  • Maggie Smith, poet and blogger for the Kenyon Review;
  • Jennifer Smither, poet; and
  • Robin Troth, Kilbourne Middle School language arts teacher.
