In Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy wrote, "Spring is the time of plans and projects." This statement could not be more true for Worthington Libraries.

In January, the library board approved a 2013-2015 strategic plan. It was developed with input from hundreds of community members through focus groups, surveys, social media and face-to-face conversation. The plan is focused on the areas of learning, adaptability and community and is very aspirational in nature. Among the goals listed: we will find more ways to say yes and we will change how people view the public library.
This will be accomplished by being responsive to community need. For example, during the planning process, many patrons pointed out it's inconvenient for the libraries to be closed on Sundays during the summer months. Summer Sundays were cited as a time when people could enjoy the libraries with their families without the pressure of school assignments. I'm pleased to tell you that Worthington Libraries will now be open on Sundays throughout the year.
This strategic planning process also led us to reevaluate the library's mission and core values, both of which had been in place, essentially unchanged, for more than a decade. The staff team leading the process decided the mission and values no longer reflected the Library as it is now or as it could be in the future. A change was needed!
The new mission of Worthington Libraries is: We connect people to a world of ideas and each other. Our core values are: service, innovation, collaboration, leadership and fun. Fun might not seem to be a traditional core value, but much of what we do is focused on getting people excited about reading and learning in ways that are engaging and fun. Having fun is an important part of visiting the Library, especially for the more than 50,000 children who attend storytimes each year!
There are even more plans and projects ahead for the Library in 2013. To learn more about them, please join me at our annual community breakfast on Tuesday, April 16 at 7:30am at Worthington Park Library. I look forward to seeing you there! Until then, happy spring!
