Great historical fiction with a murder mystery twist. I couldn't put it down!
Josie is a 17-year-old living in New Orleans in the 1950s. Her mother, who considers Josie more a mistake than a daughter, is a prostitute in the French Quarter. Despite her upbringing, Josie strives for bigger things and devises a plan to get out; her intelligence and determination make her dream of attending Smith College possible.
But there is a snag in her plan. Her mother's affiliation with New Orleans' seedy underbelly has put Josie right in the middle of a murder investigation.
From the author of Between Shades of Grey, this is a great story with a fascinating setting and a strong leading lady. I really enjoyed all the twists and turns of this book, and I wanted to be Josie's friend along the way. Once you get started, it's a hard book to put down!
I work with kids and adults at the library. I'm a new mom, so these days you can find me reading board books, singing silly songs and wiping drool off my clothes. When I have some spare time, I enjoy reading and listening to audiobooks, doing yoga and cooking with my husband.
