In brief
A wordless story with beautiful illustrations about a brave girl during the Civil War.
Unspoken is the story of a young girl who lives on a farm during the Civil War. While working in the barn, she discovers a runaway slave and tries to help by bringing him small bits of food wrapped in a napkin. In the author's note at the end of the book, Cole said he wanted to show the quiet acts of bravery performed by everyday people during a scary time.
I was drawn to this book because of the stunning pencil illustrations. The wordless story is beautifully told, and allows readers to create their own narration.
