Inspiring stories about women making a difference worldwide!
Vital Voices started as a government initiative under the Clinton Administration with the goal of bringing women's issues to the forefront. Now, as a nonprofit, they work with women all over the world to develop leaders and support women's health, safety, education and empowerment. Women make up half the world (or as a Chinese proverb puts it, hold up half the sky) and Vital Voices believes the more we invest in women, the better our world can be.
The book is separated into five chapters, each a pillar of the Vital Voices organization: sense of mission, roots in the community, connecting across lines that divide, bold ideas and bold action and paying it forward. Each chapter expounds on the history of the organization and its goals, and gives the reader short, compelling stories about women leaders and activists.
I was equal parts saddened by the hardships women face around the world and inspired by the women who are making a difference. What an inspiring read.
I work in Adult Services and co-host Literary Libations: A Rusty Bucket Book Group. I enjoy reading and listening to audiobooks (of course!), yoga and cooking with my husband.
