This fictional tale of one of Gantos' childhood summers will have you cringing, laughing out loud and perhaps even pondering deep social issues.

Imagine you're a 12-year-old boy growing up in small town America during the early 1960s. Summer vacation has just started and you can't wait for the endless days of lounging, reading, baseball and hanging out with your BFF, Bunny, that lie ahead.

Things get complicated when you accidentally shoot off your dad's souvenir war rifle and your mom grounds you for the ENTIRE summer. No baseball, no Bunny, lots of chores and-- even WORSE-- you are sentenced to helping a weird old lady write obituaries.

Factor in an obscene number of bloody noses, an eccentric cookie-loving town historian, molten wax, arsonist Hells Angels, a pony named War Chief, murder and a tricycle-riding, self-appointed, highly annoying volunteer policeman and you've got Dead End in Norvelt.

An enjoyable read whether you're 12 or 52, this title would appeal to fans of history, mystery and humor.

Jack Gantos will be in Worthington on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 as part of the library's Hear & Now author series!
