In brief
Beautifully complex, this novel is not at all what it may first seem.
Julavits has fascinated me ever since I read and became completely mesmerized with a short story of hers from a Best American Fiction Anthology in college. Much of her work since then hasn't hit me in quite the same way, but The Vanishers reminded me of why I fell in love with Julavits' writing in the first place.
She writes with an eerie, descriptive, emotionally-charged prose that unfolds the story of a young psychic's descent into and out of madness over the haunting suicide of her mother.
