In brief
Hands down, one of my favorite books of all time.
It's that time of year: the air is crisp and cool, the leaves are turning and I want to lace up my shoes and go for a good long hike. Time to read A Walk in the Woods again and get all inspired!
Equal parts memoir and history of the Appalachian Trail-- and incredibly funny-- this book never fails to stir hopeful feelings in me (and make me laugh, to boot). Surely I, too, can join the legion of trail hikers and participate in what has become an American tradition! I can make it for weeks at a time in the wilderness, just me and my trusty pack! Or…I can read A Walk in the Woods and live vicariously. And go for a day-hike afterwards.
If you've never read Bill Bryson before, I highly recommend it. His particular brand of self-deprecating wit, combined with well-researched travel writing, make for a super-satisfying read.
