Can an ordinary red crayon take you on a stunning and incredible journey? This flight of fancy says, "Yes!"
Some people don't like a wordless book. Wordless means the pictures have to do all the storytelling, and not every wordless book is good at telling a story. Journey is not one of those books. This is a great book with which to practice skills. Children will be able to tell a story about what is happening in this wordless book. Journey is perfect for a picture book walk.
Journey's pictures are elaborate and beautiful. It's not just a picture book, it's a work of art. I would turn every page and be so delighted with everything offered up to my eye. The book starts out in muted tones almost like The Wizard of Oz. When the little girl's journey begins, so does the color. When I got to the very first true page of color, I felt like Alice walking into Wonderland. Should I tell you about the magic carpet ride, or the airships that look like something straight out of a Hayao Miyazaki film? Let me just say that this book touches on so many things I love that I had to keep going back and looking at it over and over again. I am still enchanted.
Treat yourself to some whimsy and pick up a copy of Journey.
I work in Youth Services, and like to read all kinds of books, although nonfiction is not my favorite. I spend a good portion of my time rooting for the Reds with my basset hound sleeping in my lap. I have been known to ride my scooter, watch Tim Burton movies and sing silly songs.
