Thoughtful discourse on topics ranging from football to gun control to songwriting, combined with awesome new and quotable curse words.
Chris Kluwe, author of Beautifully Unique Sparkleponies: On Myths, Morons, Free Speech, Football and Assorted Absurdities, made national headlines last year for a letter he addressed to Emmett C. Burns, Jr., a delegate from Maryland, who had issues with a Baltimore Ravens player's defense of gay marriage.
Kluwe's letter, which appeared on the website Deadspin, was articulate, passionate and filled with insults. He eviscerated Burns and became the NFL's most outspoken proponent of gay marriage and a lightning rod for controversy.
Earlier this month, Deadspin published another article by Kluwe in which he states he was, "fired by two cowards and a bigot." If he believes he is in the right, he is unafraid to say exactly what he thinks, damn the consequences.
Damn the consequences would have been another suitable subtitle for Beautifully Unique Sparkleponies, in which Kluwe offers his opinion on everything from gun control, government, people who recline their seats on airplanes (if you do this, I hope you don't ever find yourself sitting in front of Chris Kluwe) and football. I appreciate his candor, bracing wit and ability to mash-up curse words into delightfully new and naughty expressions.
But above all, he deserves kudos for his conviction and bravery on being so unabashedly outspoken on so many controversial issues. He speaks his mind, and that's inspirational. Damn the consequences.
Chris Kluwe will be in Worthington on Thursday, March 27, 2014 as part of the library's Hear & Now author series!
