A child doesn't have to be sleepy to find this song rousing.

This song is sung to the tune of Frère Jacques.

Are you sleeping, are you sleeping,
Bounce child up and down on your knees.
Brother John? Brother John?
Morning Bells are ringing,
Tip child to one side.
Morning Bells are ringing,
Tip child to other side
Ding, Ding, Dong
Bounce child up and down on your knees.
Ding, Ding, Dong
Bounce child up and down on your knees.

Help your child be ready to read by practicing early literacy skills.

You can help by:

  • Talking about things around you, saying what is alike and what is different
  • Helping children recognize shapes
  • Pointing out letters around you

Activities for Babies:

  • Draw shapes in bright colors and cut out shapes from brightly colored paper. Show your baby the shapes and say their names.

Activities for Toddlers:

  • Talk about what is alike and what is different. For example, truck versus van or skirt versus dress.
  • Draw and compare a square and a circle, a square and a rectangle.
  • Letters are made of shapes. Read a book about shapes with your child.

Activities for Preschoolers:

  • Cut out different letters of the alphabet. Practice naming the letters with your child.
