During the Worthington City Council Meeting held on Monday, July 2, 2007, the council recognized the Worthington Libraries with a resolution in honor of winning the 2007 Library of the Year award.
Members of the library staff, Board of Trustees and Friends of the Worthington Libraries gathered in the Council Chambers of City Hall for a special presentation, where City Council President Lou Goorey read the resolution to the group. Before giving Library Director / Clerk-Treasurer Meribah Mansfield a congratulatory hug, he added: "I really appreciate what you have done for Worthington and for all of our residents, students and all the people who live in the school district and surrounding areas."
Library Board president Martin D. Jenkins then took the podium. He mentioned how for many years, the library had to heavily restrict the amount of employees it could hire due to changes in state funding. During this time, whenever an employee left, existing staff had to cover that person's duties in creative and innovative ways. "To go through that kind of period of time and then win this award in which customer service is one of the primary ingredients is quite a compliment to the staff." Another component highlighted by the judges was the library's stewardship of public money, Jenkins went on to explain. Asking Board and staff members to stand, he made special mention of the Friends of the Worthington Libraries, which has financially supported many of the library's public programs.
City Council Member Bonnie Michael shared her own thoughts about the library: "The library is such a great part of our community and it serves everybody from cradle to grave . . . adding so much to the quality of life here."
City Council Member John Butterfield expressed his appreciation for the library's strategic thinking and the partnerships it has fostered over the years. "I'd also like to extend my thanks to the library for bringing national recognition to the Worthington Libraries; but we are the beneficiaries. You brought national recognition to the City of Worthington and the Worthington School District . . . we appreciate that."
Meribah Mansfield made special mention of Lisa Fuller (Community Relations/Development Director), who wrote the Library of the Year application. "The editor of Library Journal said he couldn't put it down it was so beautifully written . . . Lisa's right up there at the top of why we got this award."
