Recite this rhyme (about a very obedient teddy bear) with your child, helping to improve her/his early literacy skills.

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn around,
Turn around in circle.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, touch the ground.
Touch the ground.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, show your shoe,
Put one foot out in front.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, that will do.
Shake finger.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn out the light,
Pretend to flip light switch.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, say goodnight.
Place head on hands and pretend to sleep.

Help your child be ready to read by practicing early literacy skills.

You can help by:

  • As you go throughout your day, talk to your child about your plans and describe activities as you do them. Encourage your child to talk about what he or she is doing too.

Activities for Toddlers and Preschoolers:

  • If your child has a favorite book you've read over and over, try a different approach to reading it. Instead of reading the words, talk with your child about what is happening in the pictures. You can also ask your child to tell the story by describing the pictures.
