Purpose

Under general supervision, the Programming Specialist prepares and conducts programs and performs related duties.

Essential Position Functions

  1. Proactively provides customer service
  2. Interviews, researches, and answers questions from patrons
  3. Recommends materials based on patrons’ interest
  4. Plans, promotes and presents programs for patrons inside the Library; and outside of the Library through community outreach, with the guidance of the Outreach Services/Volunteer Coordinator
  5. Assists patrons with basic troubleshooting of common software products, operating systems, browsers and other technologies associated with library services (including handheld devices, e-readers, laptops, tablets, etc.)
  6. Maintains inventory of storytime supplies
  7. Supports Librarians in developing and maintaining the collection, as directed
  8. Performs duties of, School Help Associate, Library Associate, and Circulation Assistant, as needed

Required experience

Education, Training and/or Experience
  1. Bachelor’s degree or a high school diploma or GED and an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; and
  2. A minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience; and
  3. A minimum of one (1) year of experience developing and presenting programs for children; and
  4. Ability to pass alphanumeric sorting test; and
  5. Ability to pass computer skills test
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics
  1. Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records
  2. Ability to work accurately with attention to detail
  3. Ability to arrange items in alphanumeric and/or subject order
  4. Ability to deliver programs and speak before groups
  5. Knowledge of traditional and electronic resources including web sites, databases and on-line searching skills
  6. Ability to retain and follow library circulation policies and procedures
  7. Ability to develop and present age-appropriate programs and activities on a daily basis
  8. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
