My friends are tired of hearing how creepy this book is.
Listen, I am not a ridiculous person. I am a very normal, self-sufficient human being. But this book scared the bejebus out of me.
It's just that THIS BOOK IS SO CREEPY. It's been awhile since I've read a book that felt so real, even though I (should have) knew better. The vintage pictures (that are REAL PICTURES Ransom Riggs has collected over time) alone are pretty freaky.
I involuntarily screamed twice while reading (listen, I'm not proud, okay? IT JUST HAPPENED). I pretty much only read this during daylight hours and never slept with it next to me in case it came to life at night (I scare easy, obvs). I very seriously thought about whether I should keep this book in the freezer at night so that it couldn't get me. Next time someone asks me for a "scary book" this is totes my pick.
So if you are up for a spooky read just in time for All Hallow's Eve, I have your book right here. Please take it away from me before I throw it in the freezer.
I worked for Worthington Libraries from 2008-2016 and like to read the best books (meaning young adult fiction) in the library. I keep a hot dog-related bucket list of places in the USA I want to visit and dine at during my life. Other passions and faves include roller derby, slow cookers, car/scooter repair and pop culture. Oh, and I would like to meet your dog.
